Go or Stay
Welcome
or not?
Gaily painted greeting
locked away
behind iron.
He raised his hand
to knock
shoved it in his pocket.
Clenched
his fingers tight
so they would not miss touching her.
He turned
and
walked away.

I spent a great many of my late teen years and early twenty years thinking that it was women who were afraid and insecure in their relationships. Never gave a thought to men possibly having angst and fears too. Then an older man opened up to me and it became clear that men feel as deeply as women and sometimes, more so. You have relayed that beautifully here.
ReplyDeleteI have a lump in my throat right now ... I can see, quite vividly, that man.

ReplyDeleteSo much left unsaid... powerful.
ReplyDeleteSad story...
ReplyDeleteOh no, go back. A moment's hesitation and all resolve crumbles.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's best to act, not think...Sad story...
ReplyDeleteHow powerful this this, I have crippling social anxiety so I have walked away many times and its not really something you forgive yourself for
ReplyDeleteSad story of doing or not doing the right thing...would his welcome have been warm...did he make the right decision?
