Held Hostage

Jack Vettriano - Yesterday's Dreams

Held Hostage

Nailed to the window
by a broken promise
she waits
for the date
that never comes.

He promised her something special
A night on the town
an unspoken surprise.
She has waited
for this day.

Now in a new dress
she waits some more
unwilling to admit
he is more than late.
He isn't coming.

He broke the date
his promise
her hopes
the dream
of a life together.

  1. He was not a true gentleman. Tsk, tsk...good evocation of a mood!

  6. This happened to me once, when I was a teenager. I waited all week with great anticipation for a date with a guy who called and broke it about an hour before he was due to pick me up. (I was an old flame visiting what used to be my hometown, and his mom told him it wouldn't be fair to the new girl he was dating if he saw me.) I still remember the disappointment, the failed expectation, the all-dressed-up-with-nowhere-to-go feeling.

My male cousins took me out to the movies instead. It was a poor substitute.

  7. I don't think she will have a problem catching a guy that would show up! Like Tess... I think she needs to go out.

  11. I've been at the window - once and only once. I was going to write about it but something stopped me! Maybe because I sensed someone else would but not thinking that it would be you. That's freaky. Not the poem but the fact that we though along the same lines - again! I was 18. I didn't think of a future but an evening spent with someone I liked. I remember waiting for the car which did not come and that horrible feeling of being let down.

    Good write.

  12. It so makes me want to say, all dressed up and no where to go, so totally unfair!

  13. I was waiting for a story. You grabbed me with the hurt. Now I want to hold her, while she holds back the tears.
